Hinkley Family service and funeral service

This was a very special weekend. On Friday morning we went to the viewing. In the past I have felt uncomfortable at viewings, it's just always felt a little creepy, but this one didn't at all. He looked very peaceful, like he was just sleeping. There were so many beautiful flowers in the room it smelled so good. They had the cutest picture of President Hinkley and his wife when they were younger. They also had the new bust of President Hinkley there. Later that night the Hinkley family had a private service. President Hinkley requested it because he knew that his funeral would be such a public affair that his children wouldn't all be able to speak and be a part of it. This was my favorite part of the whole weekend. Each of his children spoke and told little funny memories of their father, and a few sweet ones. The grandchildren and great grandchildren sang primary songs about grandpa Hinkley it was so cute. The family thanked all the non family friends that worked so closely with President Hinkley through the years like: Don Stahley, Sherri Dew, the medical staff, and his security team who were all invited to the family service as well. They told us about how he died. The Wednesday before he died he went to work all day and they say he was as sharp as ever. The next day he woke up and said for the first time ever that he was just too tired to go to work. The family new something was wrong at that point. His children and doctors and well as the first presidency were with him all weekend. They said that he just felt very tired and slept most of the time. Sunday evening the family sat mingling while he slept near by when someone looked over and noticed that he didn't look like he was breathing. The doctor checked him and confirmed that he was gone; just like that. They said it was as peaceful as it gets he was here one moment and gone the next. It was just how he prayed it would end. Richard Hinkley said that President Hinkley's biggest fear was to have his death drawn out in front of the public because he knew how hard that would be on all of us. He also prayed that he would be able to work right up to his death, and both of his prayers were answered. My favorite part of the night was the many musical numbers sung, my favorite was "Somewhere over the Rainbow" which has very special meaning to me. At the end we concluded by singing "God be with you till we Meet Again" and waved our white hanky's to say good-bye. It was a very nice service and I feel so lucky to have been able to go. I am sure you all saw the public service on TV so I won't go into detail about that. But the one thing I will say is at the grave sight after the dedication President Monson walked around and shook everyones hand and gave his condolences and there was just something different about him in that moment that everyone there seemed to notice. You could see and feel the presence of a Prophet in him. I thought that after President Hinkley had been our prophet for so long that it would take some time to fully feel comfortable with President Monson but it was an instant familiarity as he walked around at the grave sight. We will miss President Hinkley so much but I know that the keys have been passed down and that President Monson has been called of God.
President often said to the family "Keep the Chain Unbroken" I hope that our family can live up to that motto. And that as we have children they will know of their strong heritage and that they too will continue to keep the chain unbroken.

Meg...thank you so much for sharing these things with us. Hearing the details of his death made me feel so happy. It also made me feel so wonderful to hear your feelings on our new prophet. What an amazing experience this weekend must have been for you and your husband. Thanks again for sharing. Would you mind if I linked this post of yours to my blog for my family and friends to read? I will understand if it is too personal. It is just such a sweet and very personal tribute to our prophet from one of his family members.

Oh, I didn't notice that this was a new post. This is so sweet. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad that both of his wishes related to his passing came true. And, why wouldn't they? He has done so much on this earth right!
