A long time ago I signed up to go to a fondant cake making class when they passed the sign up sheet around in Relief Society. I have always wanted to learn how to make a fondant cake and thought it would be fun. So I went to the class and this was my first creation with fondant. You can see that I was very limited in my decorations. I pretty much had to use whatever the teacher had in color and cookie cutters. I used all green because the other color available was pink and everyone else in the class was using it so the wait time for each shape was too long and I got impatient.
I must have not been paying attention when they talked about why we were having this class. What I didn't realize was, I was also signing up to make another cake by myself for an enrichment night get together. This meant I now had to go out and buy all kinds of stuff like cookie cutters, fondant, fondant food coloring, card board rounds and a large platter. Our cakes also had a few requirements that we had to incorporate into our cakes including: different colored fondant and there had to be a filling layer inside the cake of something. I did a chocolate cake and the bottom tier had a raspberry jelly filling layer and under the fondant it was frosted with chocolate frosting first. A lot of people don't like fondant so I figured if the take it off they will still have a frosted cake. I, being quite competitive decided to go all out so I would have the best looking cake there. I chose a picture from on line to copy and went for it. This particular cake had two tiers and tiny cup cakes surrounding the base. I new it would be a lot of work but I didn't realize just how much time it would take. Only 9 hours after starting my cake, it was finally done.
I feel pretty good about it considering no one was there to help me and the only thing they taught us how to do at the class was to roll out the fondant and use cookie cutters to make decorations. There was supposed to be a tiny girl sitting on the edge of the cake made out of fonadant wearing the hat but that proved to be a little beyond my capability so I settled for her hat and purse, which I was very proud of. Don't look too closely there are a lot of mistakes.
At the enrichment night everyone loved my cake and I won the prize for best decorated cake! Yeah, all that hard work paid off! The best part of the of the night was when one of the funniest older women in my ward decided to cut my cake. I had my back turned when she started and she didn't realize that there was not only a plastic dowell in the center of the cakes to hold them together, but there was also a cardboard round under the top tier. She had a huge knife and chopped right down the top tier, through the cardboard and into the bottom tier. It was pretty funny when I told her and she said "I thought it was tricky cutting throught the middle". That still didn't stop her from cutting it again the same way in the other direction.
After we all gorged ourselves with cake we had a yoga class. For one I am terrible at yoga because I am flexibly challanged and two I was so full that all that bending was making me sick. I don't recommend yoga right after a big meal.
I love our ward and all the woman in Relief Society, they are spunky and fun to be with. The moral of this story is before you sign your name to any Relief Society sign up sheet, make sure you know what you are getting yourself into.

That's such a darling cake. Good job! You are assigned to make me a birthday cake. I wonder how much shipping will cost?
